Book notes & reflections: An Elegant Puzzle
16 September 2023 LeadershipIn this article, I share my notes and reflections from the book “An Elegant Puzzle: Systems of Engineering Management” by Will Larson. This includes an overview of the book itself and then some of my key takeaways, how they relate to my own experiences, and what I am trying to implement as a result.
This is another long one, and while I didn’t enjoy the book as much as the previous engineering management books I have read (The Art of Leadership and The Making of a Manager), I still found a lot of use in the author’s structured approaches to different problems. Book notes & reflections: The Making of a Manager

This article is a long one since the book really struck a chord with me. While I’m no longer in my first management role, I seemed to have picked this book up at the perfect time in my career to cause far too many reflections and eureka moments. As a result, this article also includes many thoughts about my career and, more often than not, my failings as a leader.

I’ll give an overview of the book itself and then some of my key takeaways, how they relate to my own experience, and what I am trying to implement as a result. I’ll finish with some career reflections that this book has helped clarify, including why I recently changed roles.
